Military Base Portland - USCG Group/Air Station North Bend Headquarters, part of USCG District 13, is located in North Bend, OR, surrounded on three sides by Coos Bay. These offices oversee all Group North Bend unit operations and support operational units by providing administrative, supply, medical, engineering and communications services.
The North Bend Group's missions include maritime search and rescue, law/contract enforcement, aids to navigation and marine environmental protection. Most of these airfields were under the command of the Second Air Force or the Army Air Forces Training Command (AAFTC) (the predecessor of the current United States Air Force Air Education and Training Command).

As an Air National Guard unit, the 173 FW is maintained by the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The Umatilla Chemical Depot is located in northern Oregon, close to the communities of the Umatilla people.

The most important event in the fort's history occurred on the night of June 21, 1942, when I-25, commanded by Commander Tagami, opened fire on Fort Stevens with its 5.5 deck gun.

After being decommissioned in 1947, Fort Stevens is now one of the most popular units of the Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site includes preserved portions of the fort, a museum, and reconstructed earthen ramparts of the Civil War fort.
Campsites and beautiful beaches belie the fort's place in history. It was the site of shipwrecks and enemy ships running aground on its bucolic shores, but its main historical importance was as an active military installation defending the Great Western River.
